The need to replace fossil fuels and the emergence of new uses are driving a trend of increasing wood demand: at least double our current consumption by 2050, according to the Transition scenarios published by ADEME.
However, France's timber trade deficit further widened in 2022, reaching a loss of €10 billion, equivalent to 15% of our national production that we import annually. Yet, wood is abundant – in our hedgerows, gardens, and streets. But this inexhaustible resource remains underutilized because it's too heterogeneous: it is entirely composted industrially, with a 20% material loss in the process.
Thanks to an innovative material pre-treatment process, Melia adds value to this hedgerow wood to produce reliable and ecological pellets, intended for heating homes, businesses, and communities. In a world of increasing constraints, where climate change is now part of our lives, it becomes crucial for regions to effectively leverage their own wood resources, with the aim of:
- Moving towards greater energy independence and gaining resilience in the face of crises
- Improving their carbon footprint to comply with the Paris Agreement through
> Reducing direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions
> Increasing natural carbon sinks
This is Melia's ambition.
