ReedMaterial

Reed Material develops 100% bio-based panels from Provence reed for furniture and construction.

Boris Doré, Basile Millet, and Benjamin Vincent, co-founders of Reed Material, a deeptech startup specializing in biomaterials and bio-based panels derived from Provence reed

Conventional wood panels – medium-density fiberboard (MDF) and oriented strand board (OSB) – are ubiquitous in furniture and construction. But behind their apparent commonness lie two major problems: a direct contribution to global deforestation, and the massive use of petrochemical glues with high emissions. Reed Material is developing a radical alternative by utilizing Provence reed (Arundo donax), a fast-growing local plant, to produce 100% bio-based panels. Wood-free, with no added resin – the material's cohesion relies on the natural self-bonding of lignin. The result: a low-carbonsolution, rooted in local regions, specifically designed for the furniture and construction markets.

The next step

Reed Material is simultaneously working on several fronts: convincing the first customers and converting discussions on concrete pilot projects, stabilize mechanical performance and industrialize the material's reproducibility, secure the cane supply by deploying the first plantations and contracting with farmers - and prepare for a Seed round in 2026 consistent with these milestones. A packed agenda, reflecting the ambition of a startup laying the foundations for an entire industry.

Why 21st by CentraleSupélec?

Transitioning from prototype to industrial enterprise is a leap that cannot be improvised. 21st by CentraleSupélec provides Reed Material with a structuring framework to prioritize markets, refine product validation through use and prepare for a rigorous fundraising round. Beyond the methodology, it also provides access to a network of investors and industrial experts, a critical eye on the roadmap - and valuable credibility for a startup preparing to industrialize a local agricultural sector.
